The dairy cattle project is a great way to learn about the dairy industry and milk production, animal nutrition, health and reproduction. Dairy project participants can demonstrate their knowledge and abilities at dairy cattle shows from the local to national level, in public speaking contests and in dairy cattle judging.
You will explore all areas of the industry such as animal husbandry, livestock selection, health, and care. You can also compete with beef cattle at local, county, state, and national cattle shows.
There are so many people more than willing to help you out, both local families and your county extension office. In this project you will learn:
- Proper nutrition
- Proper care for your animal
- Decision making
And you can also learn through various other opportunities:
- Public Speaking
- Community Service
Major Livestock Shows in Texas
There are several opportunities in the summer and spring to show at the major livestock shows in Texas. It is a long-standing tradition and a great learning experience. You are able to compete against people from across the state.
Dairy Judging Contest
The Texas 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest will be during the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. For Senior 4-H teams, this contest will serve as the national 4-H qualifying event. However, there will NOT be a separately scored contest or awards presented by Texas 4-H. The team and individual rankings will be based upon the Fort Worth contest. The same team structure a county designates for the Fort Worth contest will be the same structure used in determining 4-H team qualifications for nationals..
