Abstract Overview

The Texas 4-H & Youth Development Program will initiate a program based on science and the scientific method. This project would allow youth to apply subject matter they have learned through various projects and programs. The scientific method is a process for experimentation that is used to explore observations and answer questions. Scientists use the scientific method to search for cause and effect relationships in nature. In other words, they design an experiment so that changes to one item cause something else to vary in a predictable way.

The steps of the scientific method are below:

1. Name the problem or question
2. Form an educated guess (hypothesis) of the cause of the problem and make predictions based upon the hypothesis
3. Test your hypothesis by doing an experiment or study (with proper controls)
4. Check and interpret your results
5. Report your results to the scientific community
