From September 1, 2007 to August 31, 2008 the Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program will celebrate 100 years of youth development in Texas. We encourage you to visit the 4-H Centennial site and learn how you can "Make it Yours" after 100 years of Texas 4-H.

4-H Roundup Public Speaking Contest

Individual presents a 5 to 7 minute talk suitable as a platform speech or radio broadcast. Props and visual aids are not permitted and recordings of any type may not be used. Contestants should be prepared to answer questions concerning the subject matter of their presentation. Presentations will be scored with equal consideration of composition and delivery utilizing a score sheet (revised Aug 2005) specific to the Public Speaking Contest. Contestants selected as finalists will repeat their presentations.
4-H Roundup Educational Presentations
More than 18 Educational Presentation categories allow 4-H members from the age of 9 to 18 present educational presentations using posters, powerpoints, props, or just the power of words to educate the audience on a specific topic and/or issue. Educational Presentations can be presented by an individual 4-H member or with up to five 4-H members. The presenting team has twelve minutes to present the topic/issue, in addition to another nine minutes for setup and takedown. |

| Community Service Ideas: |
1. Organize and conduct a public speaking contest. Topic should be one of local interest or concern, nationwide concern.
2. Develop skills of being a master of ceremonies.
3. Use speaking ability with and for other organizations; example: Easter Seals, United Fund, Mental Health, etc.
4. Write 15, 20, 30-second radio spots to promote 4-H and its programs year around or project information from 4-H project.
5. Write script for 4-H recruitment puppet show.
6. Volunteer as leader or assistant for deaf youth.
7. Videotape speaking contests for reference library or to critique.
8. Sponsor political debates, question-and-answer sessions, or rap sessions.
9. Organize community file of speeches given by dignitaries in the community.
10. Organize a list of speakers and program ideas for 4-H clubs.
11. Organize and develop a 4-H Speaker’s Bureau for other organizations.
12. Start scholarship fund for youth going to college or trade school for career in speaking, radio, aor TV work.
13. Sponsor purchase of portable podium for community building.
14. Sponsor purchase of public address systems for community building, retirement home, Extension office, etc.
15. Plan for development of radio or TV programs.
16. Teach others parliamentary procedure, roles and responsibility of officers.
17. Tape record interviews with older people in the community about what life was like as they were growing up. May coordinate with historical society or library.
18. Become involved with children’s hour at library — reading stories, puppet show, story telling.
19. Presentation on 4-H at ENP (Expanded Nutrition Program) achievement program.
20. Raise money for hearing aids for needy.
21. Set up hearing test booths or clinics.
22. Volunteer at speech therapy clinic.
23. Start teen toastmaster or toast mistress club.
24. Sponsor and organize a career day.
25. Telethon for fund raising.
26. Teach others sign language.
27. Identify 4-H alumni in the county. |
