OBJECTIVES:

  • demonstrate ability to obtain inspiration for designs
  • conduct design research
  • collect and record design ideas
  • use the principles and elements of design
  • follow the steps needed to complete a design
  • practice designing
  • create an original design

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  1. The Texas Fabric and Fashion Design Competition is open to 4-H members who are seniors as defined by the Texas 4-H Clover, and who have completed a clothing project with an emphasis on fabric and fashion design.
  2. There are three entry categories: accessory design, apparel design, and textile design. Within the apparel category you may choose between pattern modification and original design.
A district may submit three (3) entries in EACH category for the state contest, for a total of three entries per district, PER CATEGORY, and only ONE entry per county. Within a category, for example apparel, there cannot be two winners from the same county. There can be two winners from the same county but entered in different categories. Therefore, there can be a maximum of nine (9) entries per district. See example below—numbers are used for county names. Note that county 1 would be eligible to go to state as a district winner in Apparel AND Textiles. Apparel = 3 counties (County 1, 2 , 3)
    1. Textiles = 3 counties (County 1, 5 ,6)
    2. Accessory = 3 counties (County 7, 8, 9)
    3. Total = 9 counties from District X
  3. Entry in the design competition is by portfolio and participant interview. The portfolio is limited to one design and must include all the materials listed below. Please follow guidelines exactly!!
    1. One 5" x 7" or 8 1/2" x 11" design illustration, in color, matted and mounted on heavy paper or poster board enclosed in an 8 1/2" x 11" page protector to protect the design; illustration should be no smaller than 5 x 7 inches. The design may be hand drawn or computer drawn. Note: must be an ORIGINAL design, not an embellishment of a design.
    2. One completed design competition questionnaire. (design information sheets for accessory design, textile design and apparel design have been COMBINED into ONE DESIGN COMPETITION QUESTIONNAIRE). Regardless of the design category (accessory, textile or apparel) the same form is used for both pattern modification and original design (please follow the examples provided in the design curriculum).
    3. One page of design sketches. Explanation of Detail and Design sketches: in detail boxes show details not easily seen or identified in your design illustration; in design boxes show one drawing of original design and one alternate design (ie: same dress design, different color).
(Optional: Fabric swatches and sample trims may be attached to this page to illustrate the apparel or accessory sketches; do not include swatches of the textile design.)
  4. The illustration (photographs are not acceptable) is to be clean and neatly mounted and matted. The sketches may be done in pencil, charcoal, pastels, water colors, pen and ink, or crayons. The working/detail sketches may be done either in black and white or color, but the finished illustration must be in color. At least one sketch should show the scale of the design. For example, a ring might be shown on a hand or next to an object of known size.
  5. The complete portfolio must fit inside a standard letter-size file folder. Do not include a cover sheet or 3 ring binder.
  6. A 4-H member may not submit more than one portfolio to the state competition in the same year.
  7. Fabric and Fashion Design Entry Materials: With the implementation of the 4–H CONNECT on–line registration program, all 2007 Texas 4–H Fashion Show and Fabric & Fashion Design contest materials will need to be mailed directly to:
    Attention: Mrs. Angela McCorkle
    Extension Assistant
    Family Development Resource Management
    Texas AgriLife Extension Service
    2251 TAMU

  8. Entries must be received by Monday, May 5, 2008. Participants who send incomplete forms or use incorrect forms will receive an automatic 5 point penalty deduction.
  9. All Fabric and Fashion Design contestants must attend Roundup and participate in an interview. Do not send, or bring to interview, completed accessories, garments, or fabrics. Participants are required to bring to the contest interview thank you notes to contest donors that are stamped and addressed.
  10. Once a 4-H member wins first place in a category, he or she may not enter that category again.
  11. By entering the Fabric and Fashion Design contest, the 4-H’er is agreeing to allow reproduction of their entry for publicity purposes.
