Congress

Get ready for the ninth-annual National Junior Summer Spectacular in Louisville, Ky., July 4-8. NJSA members from across the country will be joining together at the Kentucky Expo Center for the biggest and best NJSA show yet. This year's theme is "Showdown in L-Town."

In addition to the gilt show, educational contests will be held for all members of the National Junior Swine Association (NJSA). Members will have the opportunity to compete for top honors, both in and out of the show ring. Contestants can participate in a Photography Contest, State Display Contest, Speech Contest and Extemporaneous Speaking Contest, in addition to the four other contests - Breeding Gilt Show, Showmanship Contest, Judging Contest and Skillathon. These four contests contribute points toward the Sweepstakes Contest. Youth may also compete in the new Poster Contest where members can show off their artistic talents and knowledge of the swine industry.

Gilts may begin arriving at the Kentucky Expo Center after 8 a.m.on Tues., July 4. All gilts must be in place by 9 a.m. on Wed., July 5. Contest registration and junior gilt show check-in will take place on Tuesday from 3-8 p.m., and from 7-9 a.m. on Wednesday. All photography entries must be checked in by 9 a.m., too.

The skillathon will be held on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m., followed by showmanship at 3 p.m. All state displays must be completed by 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The showmanship Top Ten finals for each age division will take place on Thursday at 8 a.m. At 9:30 a.m., NJSA director candidates will share their campaign ideas and voting will take place from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. for juniors, intermediates and seniors. At 10 a.m., the breeding gilt show will begin. Prior to the selection of the grand champion female overall, NJSA supporters are encouraged to bid in the NJSA Super Semen Auction. Participants can compete in speech contests and extemporaneous speaking contests on Friday morning. The 2006 Photography Contest Critique will take place at 10 a.m. The judging contest will begin at 1 p.m. At 6 p.m., NJSA members will be treated to a pizza party during the NJSA Annual Meeting. At this meeting, awards will be presented to contest winners. The 2006-2008 NJSA Board will also be announced. Finally, the night will end with a NJSA dance at 9 p.m.

This exciting event will conclude on Saturday with a 7 a.m. breakfast and a 7:30 a.m. Inspiration Service with Ray Perryman. At 8:15 a.m., the awards will be presented to the outstanding winners of the sweepstakes contest. At 9 a.m., the NJSA will hold its annual calendar auction to raise money for the NJSA Scholarship Fund. After the calendar auction, juniors can get ready to bid on their favorite gilts and boars from the Summer Type Conference show held in conjunction with the National Junior Summer Spectacular. The NJSA Foundation Female will also be sold during the Summer Type Conference Sale. Proceeds from the sale of this gilt will be contributed to the NJSA Scholarship Program.

Exhibitors and contestants must be members of the NJSA, and be 21 years or younger as of Jan. 1, 2006, to compete in the activities. NJSA memberships can be made via the NSR Web site at www.nationalswine.com http://www.nationalswine.com/, under NJSA/Membership, or by calling the NSR office at (765) 463-3594.

Registered Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace and Yorkshire gilts farrowed on or after Dec. 1, 2005, are eligible for the show. All gilts must be transferred or registered in the junior member's name, farm name or family name 60 days prior to the date of the show. Each exhibitor is limited to two gilts. Entries are due May 12, 2006. For entries or more information about the National Junior Summer Spectacular, contact the National Swine Registry, c/o Jennifer Shike, P.O. The 2006 Salute to Excellence application and guidelines are now available at http://www.fourhcouncil.edu/SaluteToExcellenceProgram.aspx

Thank you for your patience while we worked to redesign the nomination and application process. Based on input from the system we are implementing a new regional nomination process where two volunteers will be awarded from each region; and from the eight, two national awardees will be chosen. Regional awardees will be recognized at their Regional Volunteer Leader Forums in fall 2006 and the national awardees recognized in spring 2007 at National 4-H Conference. It is our hope that this new process will attract greater participation and gain visibility for our valuable 4-H volunteers.

Once again it's time for National 4-H Supply Service to build the mailing list for the "2007 4-H Source Book," and we need your help! We invite you to provide us with the addresses of everyone you want to receive the "2007 4-H Source Book" so that it will find its way to 4-H homes as soon as possible after the book is printed in August. Our intended in-home date for the "2007 4-H Source Book" is August 21, 2006. Requests for the "2007 4-H Source Books" will be shipped in as timely a manner as possible.
