TEXAS 4-H ROUNDUP ANNOUNCES THREE NEW PILOT CONTEST FOR 2005!
Roundup 2005 will see some new and exciting contests being piloted for possible inclusion into permanent slots in 2006 and beyond. The three new contest address a variety of our efforts in 4-H and youth development programming, from the new (and not so traditional) to expanding our opportunities for youth in our traditional 4-H program.
The pilot contest for 2005 are: Computer Technology/Application, Swine Skill-A-Thon, and Horse Public Speaking.
Computer Technology/Application Contest will take place on Monday afternoon (June 6th) at Reed Arena. This event will challenge youth to develop a business marketing plan which will include an Excel Spreadsheet, a promotion flyer using Publisher, and a presentation using PowerPoint. The contest will be open to no more than 15 youth. For more information on this and the other contest please see their respective rules and guidelines attached to this email.
Swine Skill-A-Thon will provide a challenging opportunity to our swine project members. This contest will consist of a skills test, a written test, a quiz bowl, and a public speaking contest. This contest will be Monday afternoon (June 6th). For more information about this contest you can contact Dr. Jodi Sterle in the Texas A&M University Animal Science Department. Up to 30 youth will be selected for this contest.
The third pilot contest for 2005 is the Horse Public Speaking Contest. This event will allow our horse project members to expand on their knowledge of horses by talking about the health, care, and other general topics of the horse industry. The horse public speaking contest will be held Tuesday morning (June 7th) at Reed Arena. Up to 36 youth will be selected to participate.
For a youth to participate in any of these events they must complete and submit an application. The application will be judged by a committee of each of the contests. The committee will be looking at the youth’s interest and knowledge of the project area. After being selected the youth will be notified and provided additional information about the exact location of the contest.
If you have any questions about the pilot contest you can contact Dr. Toby Lepley at t-lepley@tamu.edu.
NEW MONETARY AWARDS ANNOUNCED FOR ALL ROUNDUP DEMONSTRATIONS AND PUBLIC SPEAKING
2005 will see some new improved awards at Texas 4-H Roundup. Starting in 2005 each demonstration and the public speaking contest will award a minimum of $500.00 cash prize to the top three entries of each contest. The first place entry (team or individual) will be awarded a $250.00 (team or individual) cash prize, 2nd place will receive $150.00 (team or individual) and third place a cash award for $100.00. This is in addition to the Texas 4-H Roundup placing pins and certificates already awarded. For those contests that have the support of a gracious donor those awards will continue as in the past or as agreed upon by the sponsor. The cash awards will not apply to pilot contest.
This suggestion was brought forward by the Texas 4-H Roundup Advisory Committee for the purpose of encouraging and promoting participating in our demonstrations and public speaking contests.
Look forward to more exciting announcements about Roundup 2005 and for any questions about Texas 4-H Roundup you can email us at 4hevents@ag.tamu.edu
